CANBERRA TIMES 'QUEANBEYAN ... GROWING OUR FUTURE' PROMOTIONS

The Canberra Times, in conjunction with Queanbeyan Business Council, produced a second Queanbeyan supplement as a separate lift-out to its Sunday, 6 July 2008 edition.

QBC Executive member Jan Browne, representing Queanbeyan sports organisations, with Canberra Times representative Ernie Nichols

The 2008 supplement again highlighted the positivity currently evident in our City with HQJOC, State Office block, Queanbeyan Hospital, TheQ (all brand new projects) well under way or recently completed), and recent NSW government approval for up to 7,550 new homes at Googong and South Tralee.  Combined with growth at Canberra Airport and the DFO at Fyshwick, these projects underpin jobs growth for years to come.

NOTE: The Visitor Information Centre holds bulk copies of 'Queanbeyan...growing our future' 2008 supplements.

TRADES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Queanbeyan Business Council acknowledges that the Queanbeyan region, along with the rest of the Country, faces critical shortages in apprenticeships and that employers experience significant difficulties in finding staff with appropriate trade skills.

Whilst his has become a head-ache for employers, this very lack of skilled workers creates an opportunity for both students and mature age workers to re-consider trades as a very rewarding option.

Queanbeyan Business Council is to provide scholarships for six Queanbeyan based trades students in 2008.  This is intended to be an on-going program in future years.

This year’s programs are with the new Queanbeyan Trade School at Queanbeyan High School, The Australian Technical College in Bayldon Road, Queanbeyan and at CIT Tourism and Hotel Management Centre in Reid.  Scholarships are aimed at students undertaking trade certificates and apprenticeships.

Successful students, who must reside in Queanbeyan LGA, will be selected through an interview process conducted by Queanbeyan Business Council and the School/Faculty following the 2008 enrolment process.

ECONOMIC STRATEGY 'BEYOND THE HORIZON'

Several original QBC Executive Members were participants at Industry Focus Group meetings that assisted Queanbeyan City Council's former Manager Economic Development & Tourism (now Hon. Secretary QBC Simon Mitchell-Taverner) develop the Queanbeyan economic strategy review 'Beyond the Horizon' adopted by Queanbeyan City Council in 2005.

Whilst this document has been superceded by Queanbeyan City Council's 'Queanbeyan Tomorrow' Community Vision 2021 launched in February 2007, nevertheless 'Beyond the Horizon' is still considered relevant. The business and industry based strategies developed in this document and its subsequent 'Business Opportunities Brief' formed a foundation upon which QBC strategies were based.
